After loosing a battery for a machine I was working on, thoughts turned to using alternatives, such as an equivalent AAA ni-mh setup in a battery holder.
Typically, I know a 2.4v Varta ni-mh, is around 150 mah (You can sometimes find lower rated versions, but not often), where as a typical pound shop AAA's are 300 / 350 mah, so works out at around double the capacity.
Granted it will take longer to charge (I would pre-charge the cells before installing mind), but when you add in a battery holder (Costs are typically a quid on e-bay, but can even get some with a power switch and fully enclosed for slightly more), works out at around 1/2 the cost of a Vata.
Even when dealing with a 3.6v varta, costs are certainly less, and have the added benefit of when doing a ram reset, you just need to pop out a battery from the holder.
Only case where this idea certainly will not work, is on machines that use small battery packs, as typically used on Maygay Epoch (These from what I see on E-bay, are rated at 15 mah, over a 10th of a typical Varta).
